Celebrating carnival has long been a Mönchengladbach tradition. What makes Mönchengladbach special is the fact that the big carnival procession, in contrast to the rest of Rhineland´s carnival strongholds, does not take place on Rose Monday but one day later.

Already back in 1936, they wanted to express their self confidence by believing in the right thing and in their intention to be as free "as a fool".
As they sought an unassuming setting and tone in the beginnings, a name – "Veilchendienstagszug" (Violet Tuesday Procession) – for the carnival procession was soon found. The violet stands for modesty and it is a flower that flourishes in secluded places. The first Veilchendienstagszug took place in 1936. The carnival needed its own "battle cry". With the help of a resident´s questionnaire – over 1,000 suggestions were handed in – the words "Halt Pohl" were duly chosen and they basically mean "keep going", "stand up for somebody".

It is now already almost 70 years since the first Veilchendienstagszug wound its way through the streets. Today, it is organised by the Mönchengladbach "Karnevalsverband" (Carnival Association) of which, in the meantime, 40 carnival societies are members. Every year hundreds of thousands of visitors all in a jovial mood line the approximately six kilometre long "fool’s lindworm" and they make the visit an unforgettable experience
